Nothing bad happened on my birthday, but afterwards, yeah. :(
My sister got me an SSD for my birthday and she and her boyfriend installed it for me while I was away, to surprise me. But the Windows installation didn't work (something with the boot), and that was fine. However, they left it plugged into my computer, and I feel like the addition of the SSD was just enough to put my power supply into overload and causing the power supply to drop dead. I don't know what happened, but it also cooked my hard drives and they're no longer readable. 3 TB of data gone. Hopefully, it's just the receptors or whatever and the data can be salvaged. I have a backup, but it's been 6 months outdated. If I lose all my data (particularly my music) I'm gonna be pretty bummed out. :(

There was thunder and lightning over here not to long ago. What about over there? That could have stressed the power supply, causing it to fail later on.

As long as the hard drive platters and all the mechanical stuff related to that are working, you might be able to swap over the PCB from an identical hard drive and read them. It does have to be an identical hard drive though. If that doesn't work, data recovery is really expensive. I had a hard drive fail on me a few years ago. Now I back up all the critical files to Drop Box. Turns out 2GB is enough for 90% of the stuff I really value, and for a lot of the other stuff I already have a partial backup somewhere else (videos on YouTube, the LAG themes on the server here, etc.).

Did you get StreetPass stuff for Fire Emblem? :D

I got my first Monster Hunter StreetPass thing when I got back home. It's actually really, really useful because you get items from the people you StreetPass (and it can be done repeatedly). Saves me so much time on the item farming. =w=
This game is actually more akin to Harvest Moon/Rune Factory than I expected.

So is your computer back together now? Were you able to recover anything?

Well, it turns out my power supply not only cooked my hard drives, but also my network card and a couple USB ports. So now, I've got a new network card, my SSD is installed, but I still have no data.

My old hard drive was sent for recovery, but I'm not hopeful it will be successful. Still kind of bummed out over it.

What kind of power supply was it? I hope the recovery goes well, but you should take some time right now while you're waiting to put a system in place to minimize future data loss.

It was a... Coolermaster GX 720W. It was cheap, and perfectly fine for what I had when I first got it. But as I upgraded other parts, I probably should have upgraded it too. Meh.

And yeah, I bought 2 replacement hard drives. One will be a backup of the other and will not be in my computer ever.

720W should have been fine for whatever you threw at it, aside from maybe SLI video cards. Too bad it didn't work out that way. :( Socks always bugs me to buy higher end power supplies, I guess this is why.

Wattage doesn't matter.

A good gauge of how good a power supply is its weight.

If its heavy, she's a beaut!

If you take them apart you can also see the difference that one was built to serve you till the world ends, and the other one was meant to be cheap.

Apostrophe! :P

It was probably an OK power supply but, as Colby suggested earlier, it may have failed because of the lightning storms earlier that month. I actually never knew those could affect my computer but apparently it's common knowledge. Well, no one has ever told me. :/

damnit, and i made sure to put one in "doesn't"

But yeah lightning storms are a bitch.

I put all my important stuff "on the cloud"

I'm not responsible enough to take care of important data lol.

After more than a month, the results for data recovery are in~!

Of my 1.6TB of data they recovered 9GB. Needless to say, they aren't getting full price for this shit, haha.

Was there anything worthwhile in that 9GB recovered?

Like, nothing. I didn't pay for it so I don't really care. My sister did because she felt guilty for breaking my computer.
